Best Views
(Taken in part from Lonely Planet’s ‘Best of Dubai’ – our favourite Dubai guide)

So, you ask, where can I find the best views in Dubai?

There are some spectacular views in Dubai. Your Dubai holiday will not be complete unless you take in one or two of them. But how, and where?

You can of course hire a private helicopter or take a sea-plane trip around the city and surrounding areas with Seawings. See www.seawings.ae or find more details on this site. Other options are somewhat cheaper. Here are some suggestions:

Burj Khalifa - obviously the best view is going to be at the top (or at least near the top) of the world's tallest building (formerly known as the Burj Dubai) where, having checked in advance that it's open, you can take a speed lift to the viewing gallery on the 124th floor!  Entrance is from the 'At The Top' reception area on the lower ground level of The Dubai Mall, on the side near the lake. Leave the reception on a trip that transports you through time, from the earliest days of Dubai to the present day. As the doors open on the 124th floor, floor-to-ceiling glass walls around a wide enclosed walkway, that also houses a souvenir shop, provide an unobstructed, breathtaking, 360 degree view of the city, desert and ocean. Don't be frightened, it's an easy trip - the lifts hold about 12 people, and you'll hardly feel any movement, certainly less than any other lift you've been in. In fact it seems they've put arrow lighting in the lift walls purely to help create an impression of the missing feeling of movement. I didn't time going up, but coming down, from doors closing on the 124th floor to doors opening on the ground floor, took just 1 minute and 8 seconds again with little feeling of movement. An unforgettable experience, but book online or by phone, in advance, it's a quarter of the 'turn up and go' price.

Old Town

Use our Best Ways to See Dubai, Getting Around Dubai and Places to Visit and Things to Do pages to get the most out of your holiday in Dubai.

Burj al Arab - take cocktails at the Sky View cocktail bar atop the Burj al Arab for super views of the Palm and Jumeirah. Best time to be there is just before sundown.

Al-Dawaar Revolving Restaurant - visit at night or at least in the evening and be fascinated as planes come down past the windows on approach to the airport. Great views over Dubai and the Creek. It's at the Hyatt Regency in Deira.
Tel : 4 317 2222.

The Royal Mirage Rooftop - (one of the best hotels in Dubai) has a most relaxing external terrace bar overlooking the sea and the Jumeira Palm, and it's open to all.

Kris Restaurant - on the 19th floor with spectacular 360° views you'll find this restaurant which according to Time Out offers a small but varied modern Asian menu, personable service and an affordable drinks list. Find it at the Park Regis Kris Kin Hotel, near Burjuman in Bur Dubai. Tel : 4 377 1111

Not all of these are on the normal tourist trail so it's likely you'll need to visit by taxi - see Getting Around by Taxi.
